support through Surgery

coaching support for SURGery: PREPARATION and recovery

This 6-week coaching package is perfect for preparing for outpatient surgery and support during recovery. Included is once weekly 1 to 1 coaching, booklet on How to Create A Healing Home, sample monthly meal plan to promote nutrition-backed healing,   and 6 weeks of journal prompts to help you work through emotions during recovery.

Mental health support will improve your physical healing outcomes. Dr. Sigmund of OrthoMontana writes, "psychological factors have a major effect on the outcomes of surgery. The quality of the result of an operation is greatly affected by the attitude of the patient toward the rehabilitation program. Depression and fear lead to poorer results, whereas an optimistic outlook and sense of control lead to better results."

Working with a coach for surgery-specific mental health can lead to less narcotics use, faster healing and a better experience during recovery.  You will lessen the total amount of suffering you might experience during this tough time!

This program is designed to start at most two weeks before your outpatient surgery and support you for 4 to 5 weeks post-op. The Consultation call can be multiple weeks in advance with a start date closer to surgery. If you are already post-op and in need of support this program is still incredibly valuable for you and could be 6 weeks of coaching support with all the booklets! The program is 6 weeks for $600.

Coaching Support for strong mental health

Pre-Op: Worry and Fear

Pre-Op: Worry and Fear

Pre-Op: Worry and Fear

We often experience fear and/worry before the surgery even happens. "Will this work for me?" "What if something goes wrong?" "They just made last-minutes changes, what if that was a mistake?"

Pre-Op:Planning

Pre-Op: Worry and Fear

Pre-Op: Worry and Fear

Your recovery period will go smoother with proper planning. Who is going to look in on you, how often and when? Who will be managing the work you usually take on, at home and at work? What are your expectations of your caregivers?

Operation Day

Pre-Op: Worry and Fear

Post-Op: Identity Changes

Surgery= vulnerability, and being vulnerable can be uncomfortable.  You might feel out of control, and let your mind think every 'what if' scenario until the sedation comes. A calm, confident mind will feel so much better than out of control and worried.

Post-Op: Identity Changes

Post-Op: Sadness and Depression

Post-Op: Identity Changes

Surgery changes many of your identities in a few hours: able-bodied adult to needy patient, working member of the family to 'cut out' of the family, community participant to recluse shut-in (for a few weeks). These changes are intense and can feel disorientating.

Post-Op: Sadness and Depression

Post-Op: Sadness and Depression

Post-Op: Sadness and Depression

Feelings of sadness and depression are so common after surgery. They are a signal that we aren't giving ourselves enough self-compassion. Heighted bodily trauma also leads to heightened Flight or Fight response, you will be less able to calmly react to stress than before your surgery.

Post-Op: Pain and Discomfort

Post-Op: Sadness and Depression

Post-Op: Sadness and Depression

Of course, there is the surgical site itself! You will have thoughts about the pain, you will wonder if you are recovering normally, and maybe even try to just forget about it for a little relief. Moving through the different weeks of recovery brings new challenges and fears.

My Surgical story

I have undergone 5 total surgeries on my feet.  Even with previous experiences, undergoing surgery #5 while being a mother, wife, and entrepreneur was unlike anything I had ever done. I was caught completely off guard! I absolutely did not anticipate that recovering from surgery would be any big deal, that I would need emotional support or that extra planning would really help my family. Luckily, I was also a client to my Life Coach (coaches absolutely still receive Life Coaching!) and together we worked through so many thoughts and emotions that came up related to my surgery. I was completely surprised by just how many emotions came up for me! I was/am a busy mom, taking care of the family, competent and thriving. Recovering from surgery felt like ripping myself out of my family, going from 100mph to 1mph. I was mostly alone, not involved in the family day-to-day or fun extras like birthday invites or playdates. I was irritated at myself for not being able to take care of myself in the simplest ways like going to the bathroom or turning off a light from a switch across the room.  I noticed that I didn't have my 'cup full' of self-compassion and was looking for compassion from others (always a losing way to feel peace). While my body was reacting to surgical trauma, my Fight or Flight sense was turned up and I was quick to run away from stress like my kids fighting or avoid things I would normally deal with. With my coach, I was able to work through how my identity seemed to change over night: alpha mom to 'needy person'.

Surgery is a trauma to the body, even if it is planned and wanted. Extra support during trauma is exactly what I needed, but I also wanted more: what about nutrition, meal planning, movements (exercises), and mental health exercises? I have created this program to be what I needed during my surgery recovery and I am so excited to help others! The Coaching alone will be amazing support, and I am so excited to offer MORE to set you up for the smoothest surgical recovery possible.
